This is a Christmas CD, and yet it is not: it can be played at any time of the year, in the way that Dickens’ character Scrooge promises: ‘I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future.’

Not least, winter is a time for revelry and feasting. In the words of a medieval carol, even in its very depths come the days that ‘merite more praise then all the rest of the yeare.’ Despite the darkness and chill outside, neighbours ‘meet to sit by the fire’ and toast each other ‘with wassails of nut-brown ale.’

This CD celebrates the season in all of its aspects, poignant yet also hospitable, filled with despair yet with miraculous hope: for in the bleak of winter, our sun has been restored.
