We left our piano in America, when we moved to Delft . . . . I can't think why, except that we did bring along our beloved black labrador dog, which was supremely important. And when we finally found a piano in Holland--a deep-voiced, resonant German upright, from the 1920s--I gave away my espresso machine, as a way of making room for it in the (very, very small) house.

The years of being-without-a-piano gave me the excuse to seize upon any stray piano languishing in a cafe, and to ask, 'may I play, please?' In this way, I have developed a repertoire of cheerful cafe music: some French songs from the 60s (I am wild for Jean Ferrat), American and English traditional folk songs, Medieval and Renaissance dance tunes, Celtic jigs and ballads--all of it designed to provide background music for the happy chatter of diners.
